“anticipate rapture”  – Rex Reed

According to Kathleen Soldati, Director of Marketing for The Music Hall, “I remember the first time I heard Bossa Nova in the mid-60s – The Girl from Ipanema. At the time I had not heard of Antonio Carlos Jobim but I recall those who recorded it – Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto. I was hooked! Eliane Elias will be a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day – it’s international date night at The Music Hall!

“The Music Hall – a great place for a date!” – David Hills

About Eliane Elias
Pianist / singer / songwriter Eliane Elias was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her musical talents began to show at an early age – she started studying piano at age seven and by age 12 was transcribing solos from the great jazz masters. By the time she was 15 she was teaching piano and improvisation at one of Brazil’ s most prestigious schools of music. Her performing career began in Brazil at age 17 working with Brazilian singer/songwriter Toquinho and the great poet Vinicius de Moraes who was also Antonio Carlos Jobim’s co-writer/lyricist. In 1981 she headed for New York and in 1982 landed a spot in the acclaimed group Steps Ahead. Her first of 21 albums came in the mid-80s, with several on Blue Note Records. For her duet with Herbie Hancock, she was nominated for her first of three Grammy nominations. Considered one of the great interpreters of Jobim’s music, Elias has been featured on many concert tributes to Jobim and recorded two albums solely dedicated to the works of the composer. Her latest release Bossa Nova Stories is a celebration to the 50th Anniversary of the Bossa Nova and features her vocals accompanied by a stellar rhythm section and strings recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. As a guest artist she has appeared on performances and recordings with James Taylor, Michael Franks, Mingus Dynasty and Andy Summers. While Something for You (Blue Note 2008) showcased Elias’ piano prowess—buoyed by lively swing, balladic romanticism, and studied virtuosity, Bossa Nova Stories trains the spotlight on her marvelous vocal talent while demonstrating her pianistic mastery of Brazilian and Latin rhythms. Elias’ vocal delivery is a marvel of rhythmic freedom, swinging with the syncopations of her piano, or in counterpoint to the guitar rhythms. Her voice, phrasing, feel and interpretation place her at the top of the genre.

About Bossa Nova
Bossa Nova is a samba-based style of Brazilian music that grew from the artistic beach-culture of late 1950s Rio de Janeiro.  This fabulously soothing style of music was popularized by Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among others. Portuguese for ‘new trend” – Bossa Nova contributed a number of songs to the standard jazz repertoire. The most famous Bossa Nova song is arguably The Girl from Ipanema, by Stan Getz/Astrud Gilberto, which won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965. In 2008, Brazil celebrated the 50th anniversary of bossa nova when Rio de Janeiro organized a free concert on the beach at Ipanema starring pioneers of the style, mixing samba and jazz, that originated in 1958 and spread worldwide in 1963 with the release of “The Girl From Ipanema,”an ode to their neighborhood beach written by residents Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes.
