The Music Hall, the landmark theatre in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire has just announced a twelfth opera broadcast – added to its 2010-2011 season: Nixon in China will be broadcast live from Lincoln Center on screen at the hall on Saturday February 12, 2011 at 1pm. The Met @ The Music Hall presents the Met premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning (and New England born and raised) composer John Adams’ most famous opera, Nixon in China, with libretto by American poet Alice Goodman and – in his Met directorial debut – directed by the controversial and indomitable Peter Sellars. It had its world premiere in Houston in 1987 and at once redefined the possibilities of the art of opera. Adams will be on the podium to conduct, and James Maddalena, who sang the role of Richard Nixon at the world premiere, brings his acclaimed interpretation to the Met. Nixon in China, Sellars says, “shows you what opera can do to history, which is to deepen it and move into its more subtle, nuanced, and mysterious corners.” Sellars’s creative team includes set designer Adrianne Lobel, costume designer Dunya Ramicova, lighting designer James F. Ingalls, choreographer Mark Morris, and sound designer Mark Grey. Nixon in China also stars: Kathleen Kim, Janis Kelly, Robert Brubaker, Russell Braun and Richard Paul Fink. Self-guided tour in historic Seacoast towns of
Kittery and Kittery Point, Maine
“Settled in 1623, oldest incorporated town in Maine”
1,200+ visitors view modern, historic, waterfront homes
“all about fantastic kitchens” – NH Home Magazine
“something for everyone” – Portsmouth Herald
What could be better than spending a Spring day on the Seacoast, peeking into extraordinary kitchens and enjoying all that Kittery and Kittery Point have to offer? The kitchens we all dream of – sleek and contemporary, cozy and traditional, packed with innovation and imagination – will become a reality for one day as The Music Hall presents its popular annual Kitchen Tour. Now in its 19th year, this benefit for the Hall will feature kitchens and dining spaces in the historic seacoast towns of Kittery and Kittery Point, Maine. The tour will be held Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 10am – 3pm.
Mary Horigan, Director of Corporate and Foundation Giving, at The Music Hall notes, “The seven homes on our tour in Kittery and Kittery Point are spectacular. It’s The Music Hall’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Each year, the tour attracts over 1,200 visitors, who come out to support The Music Hall and to gain inspiration for their own kitchens. Proceeds from the tour are used immediately toward operating costs to support The Music Hall, an American Treasure for the Arts. We owe so much of our success to our incredible hosts, loyal sponsors, over 100 volunteers, our creative and hardworking committee, and our visitors – many of whom have made this a tradition each spring. Of course a warm, sunny spring day also helps!”
Betsy Cole, an eight-year veteran as co-chair of the Kitchen Tour Committee, says, “This year we have one of the most exquisite kitchens ever on the tour. Our patrons will love this one!” Photographer Greg West agrees. He’s been capturing the Kitchen Tour on film for years and has previewed a few of this year’s kitchens. “Visitors to this year’s Kitchen Tour will be privy to some exciting kitchens: down home cottage charm, and stunning views along the Piscataqua await.”
Ann Kendall, co-chair of this year’s event, says, “This year, we are confident that each Kittery and Kittery Point home will thrill and inspire everyone on the tour. The kitchens are so diverse; some are so sophisticated with all the newest equipment, while others seamlessly blend the old with the new. There are spacious kitchens and cozy kitchens and they are all wonderful. Some of us just dream about what we could do to our own kitchens, while others actually take notes and make plans for real changes. It is a spectacular day and each year is unique and exciting.”

On Wednesday, April 7, Writers on a New England Stage, the celebrated author series presented by The Music Hall and New Hampshire Public Radio in collaboration with Yankee Magazine and RiverRun Bookstore, welcomes to the stage writer-journalist Michael Lewis. The author of the scathing Wall Street expose Liar’s Poker as well as other investigative nonfiction books, Moneyball (about baseball), The Blind Side (about football), and The New New Thing (about Silicon Valley); Lewis will present his new book, THE BIG SHORT: Inside the Doomsday Machine.
In this new book, Lewis gives a character-rich and darkly humorous account of how the U.S. economy “was driven over the cliff” by a collection of professionals entrenched in the financial world. Following a brief author presentation, Lewis will be interviewed by New Hampshire Public Radio reporter Jon Greenberg, once a Washington reporter at National Public Radio and now Executive Editor of NHPR. Live music will be performed by the award-winning house band Dreadnaught. The live show will be rebroadcast on New Hampshire Public Radio.
“Among journalists, Michael Lewis is top notch. Those who’ve read his work know his humor is deeply perceptive. His insights into people and business are truly illuminating,” said Writers on a New England Stage Associate Producer Margaret Talcott.

“The dancers of the Moscow Festival Ballet spoke to the soul through the body”
- The Post and Courier; Charleston, South Carolina
Celebrate the vernal equinox and experience the power of dance with The Music Hall’s annual Spring ballet – this year, the well known timeless classic folk tale Cinderella by the Moscow Festival Ballet on Sunday March 28 at 3pm at the landmark Victorian theater in downtown Portsmouth. With sumptuous sets, exquisite costumes and spectacular dancers, this captivating young company of leading dancers from across Russia brings together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies. As the Las Vegas Review Journal said, they “deserved ‘bravos’ within minutes of the opening steps.”
According to Therese LaGamma, Programming Manager, “Cinderella is one of the most popular ballets – and when we were planning our year and specifically, our annual spring ballet, we thought this would be the perfect choice. It’s like a rite of spring here at The Hall – and a perfect opportunity to slip out of the house on a Sunday afternoon, linger over brunch and then head to the 3pm matinee at the theatre. Don’t miss this performance!”
